Extended Family Portraits :: The Messicks'

Another amazing family on the blog! I photograph extended family sessions only two or three times each year and the Messick's is the first extended family session I have photographed involving a two year old boy. Let's just say that I typically spend an entire hour and a half chasing toddlers for a baby portrait session, and the result is mostly action shots, so I was thrilled to get a few images with this little guy holding still and looking in the direction of the camera (well, at least his head is still, but his hands are moving!)

Ken and Marian are blessed with a wonderful family including three sons, two daughters-in-law and one adorable grandson. Ken is CEO of the family-owned Messick's Farm Equipment store in Elizabethtown, and works with two of his three sons. Marian has a talent for creating a beautiful artistic piece each week with flowers and natural materials for the front of the sanctuary at Elizabethtown BIC church. I suppose I should not have favorites, but I am a little biased toward a certain member of this family~ yes, it's their grandson Garrett, since I get to hang with him in church every other week and build block towers :-) Here's a peek at some of my faves~ I especially liked the couples' images and the series with Garrett and his toy!

In a two-year-old's world, having a couch outside was just plain funny~ and although
we had wrapped up the session, I had to get the camera out again just for this:

Thanks again for a fun day!

  1. Marci, these are amazing! I can't believe you convince them to take their sofa outside! The top one turned out so well - maybe we'll be able to do another one with the Starr extended family next year! And the lighting was great!

  2. Thanks Amy!! It was fun and Garrett's reaction to the sofa being outside was so cute. I am certainly not the first photographer to do this, but I love it when families aren't afraid to try something a little different!

I am also learning that next time I will hire an assistant for the extended family shoots! :-)

Giving Back~ Organizations supported by Circle of Life Photography

In giving back, Circle of Life Photography's main goal is to help those experiencing extreme poverty and nourishing them with food, shelter and spiritual guidance. Education is a big part of helping people learn how to help themselves and change the downward spiral of poverty for a better future for themselves and their children. Locally, a more tangible way of giving back is through using my photography gifts to serve others who are experiencing crisis (see NILMDTS and Pillows of Love.)

Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation (NILMDTS) gently provides a helping hand and a healing heart for families overcome by the grief and pain of the death of their newborn or infant. Offering gentle and beautiful photography services in a compassionate and sensitive manner is the heart of this organization. The soft, gentle heirloom photographs of these beautiful babies are an important part of the healing process. They allow families to honor and cherish their babies, and share the spirits of their lives. I am an active NILMDTS volunteer photographer for Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Lancaster Women & Babies Hospital.
